Several bakeries in the Corporate Area are vigorously defending their reputation following the recent discovery of a burnt body in an oven in the Corporate Area.
Following the incident, speculation was rife among consumers who pointed fingers in their quest to identify which bakery the incident actually occurred. There were some persons who even expressed reluctance in buying baked products.
no loss
However, Audrey Lecky, president of the Bakers' Association Of Jamaica, told THE STAR she was not aware of cases where any bakeries have lost profit or experienced a decline in their sales following the incident.
"I have no reports of any bakeries being affected," Lecky said. She further expressed doubt consumers would have become reluctant to purchase baked products.
"I don't think so, normally people will talk for a day or two and then they'll forget about it ... You know how people are sceptical about food," Lecky said.
Two bakeries with whom THE STAR made contact quickly made it known the incident did not take place in their respective establishments.
"It was definitely not the Captain's Bakery and we are now experiencing increased volume," Captain Horace Burrell, owner of the Captain's Bakery explained.
Likewise, a senior staff member from the National Bakery remarked that "It did not happen at National. We had nothing to do with it, absolutely nothing to do with it."
Lecky later reiterated that, " I've spoken to other bakeries and I have not found one baker that this is affecting their sales at all."
She said she wasn't even aware of the specific bakery where the incident occurred". It is highly unlikely it's an established bakery," she said.
Last week the body of O'neil Douglas was found in an industrial oven at a bakery in the Corporate Area last Tuesday. Since the incident one of his co-workers was arrested in connection with the discovery.
