Bolt, Gay & Powell to race in Stockholm Diamond League

Usain Bolt and sprint rivals Tyson Gay and Asafa Powell are to meet for the first time in 2010 in the 100m at the Stockholm Diamond League on 6 August.

It will be the first time triple Olympic champion Bolt, fellow Jamaican Powell and American Gay have met since the 2009 World Championships in Berlin.

At the Worlds, Bolt took gold in a time of 9.58 seconds with Gay second and Powell finishing third.

The trio also will meet in the Diamond League final at Brussels on 27 August.

The 2009 world final was one of the most remarkable sprint races of all time, with Gay running 9.71 to claim silver and Powell taking bronze with 9.84.

But all three have not raced together since - although Bolt beat Powell in the Paris Diamond League event on 16 July, running 9.84 seconds.

And Gay also beat Powell in the 100m at the British Grand Prix in Gateshead.

Stockholm was the venue when Powell recorded his only professional victory in nine races against compatriot Bolt at the 2008 meet before the Beijing Olympics.

"I think it was the only [100m] race he has lost in his [professional] life so he probably wants to come back for revenge," said meeting director Rajne Soderberg.

Powell and Gay were already scheduled to participate at the meeting, while Bolt was added to the bill after negotiations stretching over several weeks.

"He [Bolt] had missed a couple of races [with injury] and did not want to run more 200 metres, so it is a great honour to have him. This will increase interest in the meeting for the future and (talk of the race) will linger on for years."
