The match went into 30 minutes of extra time Saturday with the score tied 1-1. Asamoah Gyan scored winning goal on a streaking shot that sailed over the head of American goalkeeper Tim Howard.
In regulation, Kevin-Prince Boateng put the Black Stars ahead in the fifth minute. The U.S. did not equalize until Landon Donovan scored in minute 62.
Earlier Saturday, Uruguay edged South Korea 2-1 to be the first team of the 2010 World Cup to make the quarterfinals. La Celeste will take on Ghana's Black Stars next Friday in Johannesburg's Soccer City stadium for a spot in the semifinals.
The World Cup ends July 11 in Johannesburg.
