David Villa punches Honduras defender, may be suspended

David Villa had a busy game yesterday. When he wasn't savaging Honduras with goals of absolutely merciless brilliance, he was attacking them in other ways for instance, by covertly slap-punching defender Emilio Izaguirre in the build-up to a free kick at the end of the first half. As you'll see in the video above, which someone has thoughtfully set to the opening strains of "Hey There Delilah," an aggrieved-looking Villa thwacks Izaguirre with a kind of backhanded cuff, like a bear mother disciplining her cub.

Villa said after the match that he wasn't proud of hitting Izaguirre, but that he'd done it instinctively after Izaguirre stepped on his foot. The referee, Yuichi Nishimura, didn't notice, but FIFA aren't ruling out suspending Villa once they read Nishimura's post-match report. I should probably say something about justice and the integrity of the game, but I accidentally started watching this goal again, and now I just want to tell Nishimura to be cool. Be cool, Nishimura!

FIFA will wait to receive the referee's report from the World Cup match between Spain and Honduras before deciding whether to take any retrospective action against David Villa.
