Habeas corpus for O'Gilvie's son

Defence attorney representing the son of Justin O'Gilvie, the reputed right hand man and business associate of Christopher 'Dudus' Coke, yesterday made a habeas-corpus application on his behalf in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

The attorney, Christian Tavares-Finson, argued that his client had been detained for too long a period without being charged.

The attorney, however, will have to wait until today to hear whether the resident magistrate will make an order instructing the police to either charge or release the young man by a set date.

The police say the young man, who is in his 20s, is believed to be linked to the May 23 theft of a police service vehicle, which was eventually set ablaze by thugs along Drummond Street in west Kingston.

The allegations are that a police team was travelling to the Kingston Public Hospital when they were met with gunfire and had to abandon the vehicle along Slipe Pen Road.

The police say they have information that young O'Gilvie was linked to the incident. When checks were made yesterday after the application was made by O'Gilvie's attorney, the court was told that the youngster would be placed on an identification parade soon. His attorney, however, said he had received no word of this planned ID parade.

The matter returns today.
