Spragga still intends to fulfill son's dreams

Veteran dancehall artiste Spragga Benz yesterday said that he's yet to follow up on the dreams of his son, who was shot and killed by police on Saturday, August 23, 2008, on Church Street, in downtown Kingston.

The deejay, known for his witty street lyrics, told THE WEEKEND STAR that he still plans to fulfil the dreams of his son, Carlton 'Carlisle' Grant Jr, as he continues preparation for the second annual Life Fest concert, which is set to take place tomorrow at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre, in memory of his son.

Spragga Benz says he has been working assiduously to spread the message of education as that was one of Carlisle's main priorities despite his passion in acting and fashion.

"Wi nuh move pon dem mission deh yet because a education wi a push ... right now mi a highlight things weh youths can learn from and realise that certain things can happen," he said.

In a previous interview with THE STAR, Spragga Benz said that in honour of Carlisle's dreams, he would at least attempt to fulfil two: creating a movie and a clothing line brand.

However, due to a busy schedule and his continued recuperation over the tragedy which shattered the hearts of both Spragga Benz and Sharon Gapoor, his son's mother, the deejay is yet to get those projects off the ground.

And although Spragga may still be hurting, he is determined to accomplish what his son dreamt about during his 18-years on Earth.

"Mi very determine fi deal wid it, but di fus thing weh him did a deal wid was getting his friends motivated to deal wid dem education. I have connections wid companies weh print T-shirts for the event, but as far as having a clothing brand ... it's yet to be formulated," he said.

The Tiny Tot lyricist says he already spoke to Cess, who was the producer and director for the popular Jamaican movie Top Shottas, on matters relating to making a movie.

It is alleged that, after collecting the positive results from his Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) papers, a very jubilant Carlisle, past student of Jamaica College and Camperdown High, decided to go celebrate his achievements with his friends at a party in the downtown area.

However, the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) reported that about 11:50 p.m. on Saturday, August 23, 2008, members of a police party were on patrol along Church Street when two men were seen on a bicycle.

They were signalled to stop and they complied. However, one of the men pulled a gun and fired at the police. The fire was returned and the men ran. The area was searched and Grant was found suffering from gunshot wounds.

A 45 semi-automatic pistol was also allegedly taken from him. The injured Grant was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

However, Spragga Benz says he's still not convinced by the police's report, and although the incident took place two years ago, he's yet to get over it.

"Wi a gwan deal wid it same way, wi know wi cyah change di reality of the situation ... a lot of people who just a see mi from di incident still a express condolences," he said.

The case appeared in court on Monday, April 26, and is set to return at a later date.
