The island's teachers have rejected a new proposal which the Government has placed on the table for the payment of billions of dollars in retroactive salaries.
Members of the Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) met Tuesday evening to discuss an offer which was earlier presented by the Ministry of Finance.
The Association says its seven parish committees voted not to accept it.
As a result, the JTA says it is now likely that its members will step up their protest to full scale strike action.
The Association will meet on Friday and then inform its members of the next move.
Since Monday some public sector teachers have been boycotting extra-curricular activities as a sign of protest against the Government's failure to pay over billions of dollars in retroactive salaries.
