WASHINGTON DC, United States The extradition issue aside, Jamaica's close relationship with the United States was apparent today as US President Barack Obama swore in 24 new citizens, all of them military personnel, including four Jamaicans.
Speaking at the ceremony held at the White House in Washington DC, Obama condemned a proposal for immigrants to carry documentation, stating that the US must remain a nation of immigrants, reports USA Today.
He called for a comprehensive immigration bill to include tighter border security and a process for the country's illegal immigrants to become citizens.
The four Jamaicans are:
- Therica Tameica Hutchinson, US Army
Born in Jamaica, Hutchinson obtained lawful permanent resident status in 1994. She enlisted in the Army in 2004 and is currently serving as a Sergeant.
- Jerdaine Devon Oldacre, US Navy
Born in Jamaica, Oldacre obtained lawful permanent resident status in 2004. In 2009, he enlisted in the Navy and currently holds the rank of an E-1.
- Andrew Hopeton Smith, US Army
Born in Jamaica, Smith enlisted in the Armys Selected Reserve of the Ready Reserve in 2009 and at present holds rank E-3 as a Unit Supply Specialist.
- Pitrianne Natoya Williams, US Navy
Born in Jamaica, Williams obtained her lawful permanent resident status in 2007. She enlisted in the Navy in 2008 and currently holds the rank of E-1 as an Aviation Boatswain Mate for Equipment
