Tanto Blacks and his fluffy dancer entertain the audience at the Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall competition last Saturday night at Weekenz. - Colin Hamilton
Contestants in the Magnum Kings and Queens of the Dancehall competition delivered biting lyrics last Saturday night at Weekenz, showing no mercy.
With Too Qute and Black Tallant sent home, four men and four women are left to battle it out to become the next king and queen of the dancehall. Chozenn hit the stage first with Wine Fi Mi, which he performed for the first time alongside backup dancers. Guest judge L.A. Lewis brought a touch of comedy throughout the night as he dubbed Chozenn's performance a 'sobolious' one.
After falling off track last week, Mysterious continued on a downward spiral as she threw words after her fellow female contestants. Judge 'Scatta' Burrell was far from impressed by Mysterious, calling her unprepared and saying, "war comes naturally, people dead and done." Gibralta also came out on a war vibe, proclaiming that no one was bad like him to which Miss Kitty said he was the 'real man', bringing the lyrics, the swagger, intent and determination. Lewis called his performance 'Usainable', which means fast and accurate.
Queen Doll came out lyrically inclined as well to which Scatta gave her performance 75 per cent and Professor Nuts said he loved her. Tanto Blacks brought out a fluffy dancer and got a good crowd response as he worked the stage with her singing lines like, "ticklish me baby, ticklish me." Comparing his ability to entertain a crowd to that of Beenie Man, Miss Kitty said Tanto Blacks brings the complete package to the stage.
Gallawas came out with stinging comments for all women beaters, throwing words at male deejays Vybz Kartel and the recently incarcerated Bounty Killer. Scatta said he admired how she held her pitch right throughout while Miss Kitty said she saw Gallawas' emotions coming out. Bumpa stole the night for the females with her Hide Itsong, which included lyrics such as, "Lisa still a hide and eat?" and "Flippa Mafia still a hide pon boat." Lewis called her 'Ragashantious' for her 'mix-up' lyrics while Professor Nuts said she "locked the show."
While Bumpa took it home for the women, Juggla took it for the men as he came out and declared, "every week Chozenn a call up mi name, tonight mi a rub him out." Scatta commented, "Him ting nuh normal. When him write off an artiste him write him off clean." Reggae Queen had lyrics as usual but her breathing problems proved her downfall as the audience couldn't properly hear what she was deejaying. Miss Kitty gave her a stern warning to correct her breathing problem, which she said is compromising her performance.
With designs by Ricardo Johnson and a closing performance by the Cadillac Dancers, Magnum Kings and Queens brought the energy and the lyrics.
