Usually when one hears about a gated community, they immediately think about secure dwellings located in Kingston's top residential areas. Surprisingly, THE STAR has learnt about a gated community which is located in the ghetto.
First Bellrock, situated along Olympic Way, is secured with a big red gate, and inside the community, one can find are many roadways than expected.
"We have different avenues; for instance, that one at the front is called Duffus Avenue," said one resident.
One woman who calls herself Miss May told THE STAR that she has lived in the community since it was established in 1991. "There are two parts to this community, one section was built by the Mustard Seedcommunity and Food for the Poor while another section was built by homeowners who had to go through the National Housing Trust," said May.
According to the elderly lady, the community is home to over 200 persons. She told THE STAR that the dwellings ranges between two- to five-bedroom houses.
May described the community as a very peaceful one; however, she notes that men from different areas invaded their territory and the residents feel threatened by this.
"This is a very peaceful community and it was gated about two years ago by Robert Bailey who operates abusiness near the community," she said.
Keggs, another resident told THE STAR that he grew up in First Bellrock and that the gate was built to protect its residents, especially the children.
The man indicated that the only thing that was missing from the community is a playground for the youth.
When THE STAR contacted the Hunts Bay police station, they indicated that First Bellrock is not a bad area. "Most of the persons who live in that area are law-abiding citizens," said the officer.
According to the officer "they are not perfect, but it is not as bad as our hot spot".
