DJ Sunshine moves from behind the turntables to the television screen as the host of the new show, Reggaelution 20 which premieres on CVM in April.
Having been one of the few female disc jocks blazing the airwaves for the last nine years on Irie FM, DJ Sunshine will be making her debut appearance hosting a television show.
Reggaelution 20 is a weekly half hour, top 20 music countdown show which is filmed around the island.
In an interview with THE STAR, Sunshine explained how she became the host saying, "the producer Kevin Brown contacted me through either Facebook or Myspace and explained to me that the show was about Jamaican music and our music overseas. I want to help promote our music, our island so we took it from there. It's filmed aroundJamaica like Dunn's River and Port Royal so we're selling Jamaica."
tourism programme
According to the show's producer Kevin Brown, he believes Sunshine was the best radio personality with a knowledge of the music to suit the role as host. He said, "its a tourism programme as well as a reggae show, she's a good representative with her knowledge of the music. So far she's been great, very very funny on set, very humble and very professional."
For Sunshine, she acknowledges that this is a different role for her but she looks forward to new challenges.
"I like challenges so I'll have to take it one day at a time, the producer is very creative so I know it'll be good. I never thought I'd have been on radio having done architecture at school but I got offered a job at Irie and have been there ever since."
One of the longest standing female disc jocks on air, Sunshine says maintaining her status and competing with her male counterparts has been a challenge but a welcoming one. She said, "I have to keep the standard high, a number of females have told me I've opened the door for them and it makes me feel good."
