Jamaican authorities acquire Haitian prison escapees' names

Jamaican authorities have acquired a list of the names of prisoners who escaped from the penitentiary inHaiti, following the devastating earthquake in that country on January 12.

An estimated 4,000 inmates reportedly escaped in the aftermath of the disaster.

Speaking with the media recently, National Security Minister Dwight Nelson said the names will help the Jamaican authorities in implementing security procedures to protect the nation's borders from Haitian criminals who may seek refuge in the country.

The minister assured Jamaicans that intensive investigations will be conducted to ensure that refugees are properly identified and that police will be assisted by interpreters in their interrogation.

Nelson continued that those identified as criminals will be placed in available spaces in the island's prisons.

Late last month, reports surfaced in the media that two Haitians, had arrived in Oracabessa, St Mary and had eluded the police who were chasing them on shore.

Recent information dispelled that claim however, stating that the men were Haitians who were already residing in Portland and not any that fled Haiti from Jamaica after the quake.

A police constable from the Oracabessa Police Station yesterday told THE STAR that according information reaching him, the Haitians were returning from a fishing trip when they were mistaken for refugees fleeing the
