Mother, son charged with assault

A mother and son accused of assaulting a guard at the son's school are to return to court on June 2.

Both accused persons appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday, but the matter was put off as the investigating officer is to charge the guard as well.

It is understood that the mother and the guard got into a tussle after he earlier had a confrontation with her son, who refused to be searched before entering the school compound.

When the teen and his mother appeared in court last week, Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey said the charges brought against them should be revised.

They were both charged with malicious destruction of property in relation to jewellery the guard was wearing, resisting arrest, obstructing the police and disorderly conduct. The RM had also asked why the guard was not charged.

The court was told that on the day of the incident the youngster was to be searched by the security guard at the school before entering the compound. The student objected, however, and the guard was punched in the face.

The guard's baton was reportedly used to hit the boy in his head. The boy immediately ran home and got his mother. It is alleged that both went back to the school and confronted the security guard, resulting in a fight.

Policemen who were on patrol in the area quelled the dispute and charged the mother and son.
