A man accused of creeping into his ex-girlfriend's room and dousing her with caustic soda, causing blindness in one eye, was granted bail in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm is 44-year-old Cornel Ewart.

The allegations are that on the day in question, Ewart went to the complainant's house some time after 11 p.m. The complainant became aware of his presence when she saw a shadow in the room. It is alleged that Ewart then threw the substance at the complainant. She was burnt in the eyes.

The complainant told the court that she is now only able to see from one eye. Ewart was granted $50,000 bail with surety and is to return to court on July 1.
