Motorist on manslaughter charge granted bail

The Rose Hall Main road in Montego Bay has been in recent times plagued with motor vehicle accidents, and yet another motorist is facing the courts for manslaughter, after a fatal accident along that roadway.

Donald Davis, 46, a plumber of Rosemount, St James, appeared before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday to answer to a charge of manslaughter.

Standing on median

He was charged on February 21, four days after his car fatally hit Christopher Scott, 35, of Salt Spring, St James, who was standing on a median on the main road. The accident came a day after another man, Daniel Harvey, was fatally hit by a motorist along the Lilliput main road in the parish.

Davis, who attended court sporting a bandage around his head, also sustained injuries during the accident.

Allegations are that on February 18, about 8:45 a.m., Davis was driving along the road when, during an attempt to switch lanes, he collided with another vehicle, before hitting Scott. Davis then allegedly hit a bus travelling in the opposite direction.

The investigating officer, who was close by, heard screeching tyres and was quick on the scene. Scott, who was thrown several feet in the air, was rushed to hospital, but was pronounced dead.

Speeding

Attorney-at-law Natalie Messado, who applied for bail, said that Davis was quite distraught about the incident, but never tried to switch lanes on the day in question. She said that another motorist had slammed into the back of Davis' car. However, the investigating officer said there no damage observed to the rear of Davis' vehicle. He said that speeding was the cause of the accident.

Davis was granted bail in the sum of $750,000 and is scheduled to return to court on March 31.

The accident came a day after another man, Daniel Harvey, was fatally hit by a motorist along the Lilliput main road in the parish.
