Uncle gets 12 months for hitting niece with a rake

An uncle who said he was only trying to discipline his rude niece when he hit her with a rake was sentenced to 12 months' probation when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Roger Gayle appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Glen Brown to answer to a charge of assault occasioning bodily harm.

The allegations are that Gayle's 14-year-old niece, who was living with him, was disrespectful towards him after he talked to her about about cleaning up the house and taking pride in her surroundings.

The argument occurred while he was using a rake to clean up the yard. He hit her with it, causing bruising and swelling.

Gayle said he was only trying to instil some discipline in the child. He was sentenced to be on probation for a year and the child, the court was told, would be sent to live with her father.
