Lil Wayne Copyright Suit Continues

Billboard reports Lil Wayne's lawyers have asked for more time to provide documents in the ongoing copyright infringement case against the multi-platinum rapper [click to read]. The suit was filed in May, on behalf of Karma-Ann Swanepoel (formerly of the South African Pop band Henry Ate). In the suit, Swanepoel maintains that producer Jim Jonsin either sampled or interpolated the song "Once" in Lil Wayne's "I Feel Like Dying" [click to read].

The suit also states Jonsin and Cash Money/Universal unsuccessfully attempted to negotiate a license to use "Once." The recording in question was never released on a proper Lil Wayne album, although it was included as a free download on free mixtapes including C3: The Leak and The Drought Is Over 2.

Papers filed in a New Orleans court Tuesday state the deadline for Wayne's attorneys to turn over the necessary documents are Friday, December 19. If the extension is granted, it is not known when the documents would need to be turned in. The amount Swanepoel and her attorneys are seeking has not yet been made public.
