Defendant Believed He Was Chatting With 14-Year-Old
GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. -- A Navy man from Jacksonville was arrested Monday in Orange Park, accused of trying to solicit sex from a minor online. Clay County investigators said Robert Godwin, 30, thought he was chatting with a 14-year-old girl when he was communicating with an undercover investigator with the Attorney General's Cyber Crimes unit. After several online conversations, investigators said Godwin arranged to meet the "girl" at a Burger King at the intersection of Blanding Boulevard and Kingsley Avenue -- right across the street from Orange Park High School. Clay deputies assisted state law enforcement with the arrest, then recovered a computer from Godwin's home. Forensic analysis will be conducted to determine if he was chatting with any other children. Godwin, who is attached with VP-5 at NAS Jacksonville, was charged with three counts of online solicitation of a minor, a third-degree felony, and one count of traveling to meet a minor for sex, a second-degree felony. If convicted, Godwin faces up to 30 years in prison. Godwin was booked into the Clay County Jail, where he is held on $20,000 bond.
