Vince Weiguang Li (40) surprised the court with his plea to die. During an interruption in the hearing the judge asked Li, in the presence of reporters, whether or not he would like a lawyer. The accused then shook his head and said quietly: "Please kill me." Up to that point, Li had refused to speak to his lawyers.
Meanwhile, police gave further details of the ghastly murder. In one of Li's pockets the investigator found a plastic bottle which contained an ear, the nose and part of the mouth which Li had removed from the victim.
When Li, who emigrated from China four years ago, was arrested he said: "I have to stay in the bus for ever."
The district attorney's office has called for a psychiatric examination of the man, who has no previous convictions. The trial is set to begin on September 8.
