As the St Catherine South police continue their relentless fight against crime, they are now reporting the seizure of a large number of illegal firearms since January.
The Portmore police say 30 illegal guns have been seized in the Sunshine City along with 284 rounds of ammunition.
The police's increased crime fighting efforts come in the wake of the reports of more than 30 murders and shootings, also since January.
GRATITUDE TO CITIZENS
According to the police, their success would be impossible without the cooperation of the residents and as such are expressing their gratitude for the help received.
"Our relentless efforts would have been futile without the assistance of members of the public. The St Catherine South police would like to express our gratitude to those residents who are fearless in giving the police their assistance," said Constable Verdane Wright, Constabulary Communication Network liaison officer for the division.
In commenting on the seizures of the illegal ammunition, Constable Wright added, "We strongly believe that for each round recovered is a life saved."
Meanwhile, residents are also complimenting the attempts of the police.
Residents with whom THE PORTMORE STAR spoke were quick to point out that while the issue of crime will not be solved overnight, the police have been maintaining a strong presence in the area. This, they claim, gives them the feeling of added security while hindering criminal actions.
"During the early part of the year, some sections of Portmore were going on really bad, but I have to admit the police seem to be doing a good job where maintaining their presence is concerned," Millicent Rosewood, a resident of Newlands, said.
Another resident, Paul Simpson of Garveymeade, made a similar claim. "The police are making themselves seen and this not only makes us feel safe but also hinders criminals who wish to carry out their unlawful acts," he said.
