Tiney Winey winner, Jaqueline Blake, is elated about being $20,000 richer.
Blake, who participated in the finals of The STAR-sponsored competition at the National Stadium on March 30, as part of the Jamaica Carnival last hurrah, admitted that her competitors were not pleased with her entry.
"When we reach National Stadium (after the road march) and backstage, the girls were saying that it nuh mek no sense dem wine 'cause fat girls always win. One of them stretch the cheque to me an seh dat mi win already," said Blake, who won the contest in the preliminary stages.
Haffi shake
She added, "Dem seh because fat people jus' haffi shake and the crowd cheer fi dem. It's a wining competition an' if yuh don't wine, the crowd naah go cheer fi yuh."
She says she was not deterred by this as she believes in her abilities. She also had to overcome her nervousness.
"When I first went onstage, I was shy, but when the music tek mi inna mi head I was not afraid to dance. I heard somebody call my name in the crowd an' dat gave mi di boost," Blake told The STAR.
One of the voices belonged to her friend. Those friends have been some of her biggest supporters and one of them has already been assured of a fraction her prize money. Some of the money will be saved as a reminder of her accomplishment but she will not forget to treat herself.
