Wolmer's Boys yesterday defeated Old Harbour High to advance to the quarter-finals of the TVJ Schools' Challenge Quiz competition.
The Wolmer's Boys' team played a calculated and focused match, ending the game with 40 points to Old Harbour's 22.
From section one, Wolmer's sought to establish a clear lead, scoring eight points, while Old Harbour scored only four. The minutes segment proved beneficial for both teams with Wolmer's Boys scoring five points in each minute to end that segment of the match with 23 points.
Old Harbour High, however, gained three points in the first minute and five in each of the other two, to end the segment with 18 points.
As the teams moved into the buzzer segment, Wolmer's Boys' score was adjusted to 24 points, as they were given an additional point for a Spanish question previously judged incorrect.
The final segment of the match was more positive for the Wol-mer's Boys' team which got all of the eight questions attempted correct. Old Harbour were not so fortunate. Although they at-tempted a similar number of questions, they failed to get all correct.
After a judges' review, Wol-mer's' score was increased from 38 to 40 due to a scoring error.
Robert Williams, a member of the Old Harbour team, said although they lost they were satisfied. "I believe that we played satisfactorily. It's my last year in the competition but maybe Kemar and Aneita can come back and do better next year," he said.
Javoy Sawyers, captain of the Wolmer's Boys' team, said he felt they did their best. "Well, we did our best. It's our first time playing quiz and we've gained enough experience this year," he said.
All the members on the team are new to the competition and this made the team's advance to the quarter-finals, which the school also accomplished last year, even more satisfying.
The boys say they will be working even harder as they prepare for the next match.
