POINCIANA, Fla. -- An Osceola County second grader was recently removed from class after classmates said he threatened them with two utility knives at Bellalago Academy in Poinciana. The 7-year-old Eyewitness News spoke with said she won't go back to school if the boy who had knives is there. For now, he's suspended. The girl had no idea that her classmate had two utility knives in his pants, but 7-year-old Kirsten Ferentinos was caught off guard when a 9-year-old boy looked at her and made a threatening gesture before lunch Thursday."He went like this," she said, moving her hand across her throat. The boy repeated the gesture twice more. Then, in the very next class, the boy threatened another, taking the knives out and waving them around. Students said he hid them in another classmate's backpack before other kids told their teacher."This can happen at any time in any campus," said Principal Cecille Diez.Uniforms are compulsory at the district-run charter school and there's an emphasis on a safe learning environment. A letter aimed at reassuring parents offered no details of the incident, except to say a primary-age student "made an unsafe choice."Kirsten's father was stunned to learn of the weapons and wants the boy expelled once his mandatory ten-day suspension ends."That it happened to my daughter and that this can happen again and again till somebody does something about it," John Ferentinos said. The principal said the incident was handled within the school district's guidelines."I think I can assure to the parents that by the quick response [it won't happen again]," Diez said. "That safety is a top priority for us."The father of the boy who was threatened declined to file charges. If he had, the 9-year-old would have been charged with felony aggravated assault. He could still face expulsion.
