The police are reminding adults to take the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of children when transporting them. The reminder comes following the death of a nine-year-old boy on a bus in Alligator Pond.
On Monday, the Alligator Pond police in Manchester launched a probe into the circumstances surrounding the death of a student of New Forrest Primary and Junior High on the school compound.
Dead is nine-year-old Kerron Nembhard of Comma Pen district, St Elizabeth.
Reports from the CCN's liaison officer for Manchester are that about 12:30 p.m., Keron was among other students aboard a Toyota Coaster, registered CC7223, and driven by Royan Simpson of Comma Pen.
The vehicle was proceeding through the school gate when Keron, whose head was protruding through the left rear window, was trapped between the vehicle and the gate. He sustained injuries and was taken to the Mandeville hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The police are now encouraging parents, guardians and motorists to ensure that children remain seated for the duration of their journey. The police also say adults should ensure that at no time parts of the children's body should protruding from the vehicle and that small children are not carried in the front passenger seat.
The police also say toddlers should be transported in properly secured car seats in the back of the vehicle. The cops say children should not stand between the two front seats of the vehicle while it is moving, and that adults should ensure that the window and child locks are activated.
The police also have a warning for adults who fail to take the necessary precautions. "While the penalty for not practising proper child restraints may be a burden on the pocket, the loss of a loved one, especially if the fault of your negligence, is a burden on the heart; one which you will have to live with for the rest of your life," the police said in a release.
