Is there a dancehall intelligence unit in the Jamaica Constabulary Force?
Industry insiders have been postulating that there is a special Dancehall Intelligence Unit, a specialized task force that's been targeting bad-behaving dancehall deejays since the summer of 2007.
The DIU has been hunting the deejays at night. They know who runs with what crew; they're always waiting at certain clubs, and if they see you get in a car with an entourage, they pull you over. Theyre trying to set up lower ranking members of certain crews because theyre looking to get someone to switch, and bring down the big fish; they know who they are targeting, the source said.
In recent times, a number of deejays have been parading through the courts: Sizzla on a weed charge, Kartel on a indecent language charge, Aidonia on a wounding with intent charge, Bascom X on a possession of gun charge, Lutan Fyah on a charge of arson, and Deva Brat on a carnal abuse charge.
What is really going on in dancehall? Have the artistes lost their way? Are they making it easier for the authorities to target them and get rid of them?
HAPPENINGS Tomorrow, the University of the West Indies Mona will commemorate their 60th Anniversary with the passing of a symbolic torch during the Herb McKenley UWI Run relay, the Jamaican leg of the regional Run UWI Run relay, with events also taking place in Trinidad and Tobago , Barbados , Grenada , Antigua , Bahamas , Jamaica and other related territories of the University.
