Tutorial goal: This is a beginners-tutorial about how to apply an 'old-looking'-effect to a photo. You learn to work with Filters, Layer-styles and Opacity. The tutorial is made in Photoshop CS2 and would take about 30 minutes... Good luck!
step 1
The 'Old-Looking'-Effect
step 2
1. Open a photo
2. Duplicate the main-layer, and call the new layer 'photo'.
(Now you always have a back-up from your original photo)
step 3
Add some film-Grain ---------------------------------------
1 - Go to Filter > Artistic > Film Grain
I have choosen these settings, but you can variate from that.
step 4
1 - Create a new layer and call it 'Stripes'.
2 - Fill the layer with a white color (Paint bucket tool)
3 - Then go to Filter > Texture > Grain
Choose for Grain Type 'Vertical' and click OK
4. Choose layer-style 'Multiply', and change the Opacity to 50%
step 5
1 - Erase some stripes with the 'Eraser Tool' for some variation.
step 6
1 - Create a new layer (like step 4) and call it 'Clouds'.
2 - Change your colors into White and Black
3 - Go to Filter >Render >Clouds
4 - Then go to Filter > Render > Difference Clouds
5 - Choose layerstyle 'Overlay' and change the opacity to 40%
step 7
1 - Finally go to Image > Mode > Grayscale
2 - Then go to Image > Mode > Duotone
3 - Give the 2 colors a different name.
4 - Change the colors Color 1: 5a3811 Color 2: 665838
(You can change the contrast of the color by dubble-clicking on the curve next to the color.)
step 8
Now you can give the photo some more grain.
1 - Select the 'clouds'-layer.
2 - Filter > Noise > Add Noise
3 - Set the amount to 20% and click OK
step 9
1 - Finally you can merge your layers by
Layer > Flatten Image
