They will find and remove Virus, Spyware, Trojans, etc.

Now as for programs I would recommend the following:

SpyBot Search and Destroy, Excellent Spyware remover! Believe it or not this program has actually found and removed Spyware on my system that the "Paid" programs couldn't!.

CCleaner, Removes unused and temporary files from Windows machines.

FireFox, FireFox is by far the best browser in the world Smiley I have never, I repeat never been infected with spyware when visiting known dangerous sites with FireFox.

SpywareBlaster, Prevent the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software!

avg anti Virus (Free Edition), avg is a great Virus remover and detection tool.

Stinger Anti Virus, This AV is from McAfee oh and it's also free. This small program can detect and remove Virus etc. and its a exe so you can put it on a flash drive so when your infected just start the exe and perform a scan.

Comodo Firewall, This is a very powerful firewall that I use and trust. This firewall actually has the same if not more features then paid firewalls like Zone Alarm.
