SCANDALS OF THE YEAR 1. The breakup of Jamaica's most talked about couple Beenie and DAngel. It was the breakup heard around the world with accusations and counter-accusations of infidelity flying like bottles at an amped-up Sting concert. There were many chapters, the most gripping and juiciest of which were *lo**letting (Beenies) in the family home, and a well-publicised attempt by Beenie Man to retrieve his furniture from the corporate offices of M.A.F.I.A House in New Kingston. There was even a DNA test and leaks from the maintenance suit case filed by D'Angel thrown in for good measure, making for awfully good theatre and water cooler chat for several months. 2. Ms. Jamaica Universe Sara Lawrences pregnancy and her resignation before the end of her reign. In a neat twist, she had her child at about the same time that Ms. Jamaica World 2007 was being announced. 3. Cuban Light Bulb scandal and the subsequent unseemly waterworks of former minister Kern Spencer in Parliament after the revelation that up to $281m of a possible $300m dollars have been misappropriated 4. the emergence of information that mega-retailer Mega Mart had allegedly cheated JPS of millions and the subsequent resignation of head honcho Gassan Azan as chairman of Jamaica Trade and Invest, at the behest of the Opposition party. 5. Trafigura Beheer debacle hich is the scandal that keeps on giving as Dutch officials are in the island to interview officials including former Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, as well as former minister Colin Campbell
NEWSMAKERS OF THE YEAR 1. Beenie Man scored the most covers in all newspapers, and even made the news on at least three occasions with his marital problems, his tax woes, and legal battle with the Anglican church over an unauthorized video shoot on the church grounds. 2. Orett Bruce Golding who defeated the PNP in what has been dubbed PNP country and gave us memorable quotes with his dry wit 3. Cash Plus head Carlos Hill whose scheme is in financial limbo after the FSC issued cease-and-desist orders on Cash Plus on December 29 4. Asafa Powell, who crashed and burned at the IAAF Championships, only to lower his own world record to 9.74 seconds the following week, and by easing up at the line..again. Sheez!
WORST TREND 2007: POKES IN THE EYE 2007 marked a year of trends. One such ignominous trend was that of the sudden poke in the eye. The years worst incidences of this trend which is causing understandable excitement in the world of ophthalmogology are: 1. Bounty Killers unexpected poke in the eye of friend and former Scare Dem member Harry Toddler 2. Barbee being poked in the eye by Beenies brother, Blue at Jagga Bs dance (still being contested by many that she was actually slapped not poked) 3. CVM TVs Michael Pryce being attacked by a supposed mad PNP supporter in Spanish Town
ANTI-CLIMACTIC MOMENT OF THE YEAR 1. The 2007 Hurricane season with only Hurricane Dean making landfall and postponing the General Elections by one week. The season confounded projections of a busy season, with Dean being the most significant of a predicted 20-plus hurricanes which had the minnows Noel and Olga. 2. The toll road fight. The good people of Portmore went gentle into that good night and accepted the toll road. 3. Sting 2007. Dancehall fans like their pound of flesh and the lack of *lo**shed, bottle-flinging and vulgar excitement was a major disappointment for most. 4. The Cricket World Cup. The most exciting this that happened was when Bob Woolmer was pronounced dead at the University Hospital of the West Indies at 12:14 p.m. on March 18, 2007 after being found in his hotel room by a female hotel attendant. 5. The release of Jah Cure which was overshadowed by Beenie Mans shenanigans with his estranged wife, DAngel. 6. The worlds fastest man, nicknamed Afasta Powell by a pun-mad media failed to defeat his nemesis Tyson Gay in Osaka, Japan. It was ignominous enough being beaten by a man with gay as a surname, but the failure in the Mens 4x100m relay final after an alleged mishandling of the baton exchange did not rest well with the public.
