Monday, 28 January 2008 Starting Monday January 28, the St. Catherine Parish Council along with the Police will begin clamping down on taxi drivers who continue to disregard traffic warnings in Spanish Town.
The move is in response to continuing violations by taxi operators who pick-up and let-off passengers on major thoroughfares instead of using designated areas.
Mayor of Spanish Town Dr. Andrew Wheatley, said the Council will be adopting a zero tolerance approach.
Dr. Wheatley said taxi operators within Spanish Town will be asked to use the designated termination points, which are the Wellington Street, Kings Street and Burke Road car Parks.
He said the Council recently spent a significant amount of money to upgrade these facilities.
Mayor Wheatley said work on the infrastructure; sanitary conveniences and adequate lighting were recently done at the sites.
Earlier this month, the St. Catherine Chamber of Commerce, the Police as well as the Transport Authority agreed to carry out the operation.
