Police seize guns at the start of the New Year

The police are reporting that at least 10 guns and several rounds of ammunition were taken from criminal over the last 24 hours.

In the first incident, the Elletson Road Police, while on a search of premises on Commission Road in Rockfort St. Andrew, found an Uzi sub-machine and a 12-gauge shotgun, along with 39 rounds of ammunition.

They were again called into action early Tuesday morning when explosions were heard in Rollington Town.

They say they saw men on Carnarvon Street firing shots and challenged them,

The men reportedly ran, leaving behind a High Point semi-automatic pistol.

The St. Andrew South Police Division also seized two handguns early Tuesday morning.

The police say they approached a group of men along Rhoden Crescent shortly after midnight but the men ran off in different directions leaving behind a loaded nine millimetre handgun.

Three hours later, they were in Duhaney Park area, when they accosted a man at a dance.

He reportedly dropped a Lorcin nine millimetre pistol and ran away.

Meanwhile, an illegal gun was allegedly found on 28-year-old Michael Thompson of Canterbury, who was shot dead in Canterbury, St. James Monday night.

Residents reportedly heard explosions and called the police who responded and found Mr. Thompson's body with gunshot wounds on a pathway.

The police say a nine millimetre Smith and Wesson pistol with five rounds was found in his waistband.

And the St. Catherine South Police also seized another firearm Monday night.

This brings to 80 the amount of guns found for 2007 compared to 60 found in 2006.

The latest seizure which occurred in Waterford also resulted in the arrest of 25-year-old Shane Kerr of Waterford.

It was reported that Mr. Kerr was among a group of men walking in the community when they were stopped and searched by the police.

The police say they took a nine millimetre pistol with 16 live rounds from him.

He was later charged with illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
