SCHOOLS WILL go on summer break in a matter of weeks and parents will be scratching their heads to find activities to keep children occupied over the holidays.
Here is one way of keeping them busy and active throughout the summer. Sign them up for the Supahoops Basketball Summer Camp scheduled for four parishes across the island - Manchester, St James, St Ann and Portland.
The Supahoops Basketball Summer Camp will be conducted during the months of July and August by former national Under-19 coach and head coach for Belair High, Michael Stephenson.
"I would like to get as many primary and prep school students as possible because they always seem to get left out of the loop in terms of developing basketball at that age," Stephenson said.
Participating coaches
Stephenson, who also led Munro College to seven central championships and a national championship with Belair High School in 2007, said Jamaican coaches from each region will participate in the camps, and Robert Brickey, a guest coach from Duke University, has been invited.
"We are not doing this to make money. We want as many persons out there to become aware of the sport and see the enthusiasm that the kids have for it," Stephenson said.
Having successfully completed camps over the past 20 years, such as The Alpart Summer League Basketball and Netball camps, Stephenson hopes that they can have another successful concept this summer. More than 750 kids participated in the first year, with 21 assistant coaches.
"I have grown to love coaching the game and being around children, and they have benefited from that love," Stephenson said.
