'Doc' says new song not directed at artiste

"That is not the case," said Beenie Man in response to raised eyebrows about his recent song 'Hot After We', having lyrics directed at deejay Vybz Kartel.

In the song, Beenie Man deejays, Mi tief da laugh ya fi dah song ya / (laugh) / An yuh know wi nuh care/ Nuh 2000 deejay cyaan phase mi career / Mi a do dis before Diageo own Red Stripe beer / Mi still a mek hits year to year / But now dem a drive dem Benz, Benz after wi/ None a dem nah drive Benz before wi / Seh dem a gyalis, dem a gyalis after wi / None a dem nah get gyal before mi / Seh dem a hot bwoy, hot after wi / None a dem nah get clean before wi / Seh dem a hot steppa, new comer, new stepper/ None a dem nah touch road before wi.

mere coincidence

Beenie told THE STAR that the song has no reference to Kartel, suggesting that it is a matter of mere coincidence.

He said, "The problem is that because Kartel a drive a Benz now, if anybody sing about Benz a Kartel dem a talk, if anybody sing about bleaching; a Kartel dem a talk because him a do those things now. Yeah, him a di man of di moment but everything wah him a do dem been singing about it from long time."

His reason for using the laugh which Kartel made popular in his song Look Pon We, was simply, "Mi like the laugh."

He is not interested to know what Kartel thinks about the song as he said, "I doan do a song fi one individual think nutten bout it. Wi do it for the world to hear and mek their assessment. When yuh do a song for one individual it tek more out of yuh. Is like when mi do a song for Bounty Killer mi call name. The song is dedicated to no one."

Beenie said that the lines 'Cause mi a big man fi dem an dem a likkle bwoy / When mi a play dolly house yuh mada jus meet Troy/ When mi a gyalis a road dem jus deh know toy / are in no way connected to Bounty Killer's recent comments of being a 'giant' compared to Kartel, his former protégé.

Beenie is busy working on his King in Control album, and his songs Rum and Red Bull and I'm OK are both doing well locally and internationally. He has been recovering from a recent operation and one of his latest songs, Go-Go Club, is also poised to do well.

"I'm still here, not going nowhere, and I plan to go nowhere. Until death do us part," laughed the 'Doctor'.
