A woman who is accused of dragging a teenager from a wheelchair and beating her in Spanish Town is now trying to prove her innocence in court.
The woman appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday, after it was alleged that the child, who has spinal damage, was assaulted while she sat along the roadway.
Charged with assault occasioning bodily harm is Marlene Sterling from Spanish Town, St Catherine.
Allegations before the court are that on the afternoon of December 7, the 13-year-old complainant was seated in her wheelchair along Burke Road, when the incident happened.
The accused woman, the court heard, saw the child and became verbally abusive towards her. The matter is said to have developed further as the child was attacked, dragged to the ground and beaten.
Following the alleged incident, a report was made to the Spanish Town police and the child taken to seek medical attention.
The police later charged Sterling. She is now set to reappear in court on February 28.
