Jamaican Woman Granted Bail After A Year In UK Detention Centre

Yarls-Wood-006-300x180.jpgThirty-five-year-old Jamaican, Denise McNeil, who has been in a British Prison without charge for almost a year and facing deportation, has been granted bail.

She was released following a court hearing in London this week.

Ms McNeil was identified as a ringleader at the one of Britains largest Immigration Centre in Bedford.

The Yarls Wood immigration removal centre was the scene of a hunger strike against indefinite imprisonment, abuse and poor living conditions by over 70 black women, which forced the authorities to release many of them.

However, Ms Mcneil and other identified ringleaders Sheree Wilson from Jamaica and Aminata Camara from Guinea, were transferred to Holloway Prison in London since last February without charge.

Wilson and Camara will have their bail hearing on February 1.

McNeil, who has lived in the UK for more than 10 years, was arrested in September 2008 for possession of ganja.

She served a six-month prison sentence and was detained in Yarls Wood upon her release in January 2009.

She still is awaiting the outcome of a judicial review of her case after being refused leave to remain in the UK.
