School robbed four times in one month

The point of entry for the thieves - Sheldon Williams

Thieves broke into the Reliance Basic School in Portmore, St Catherine, on Sunday night, making it the fourth time the school has been targetted in at least a month.

"The grill towards the office door was cut ... they took out the petty cash pan and they threw the files all over the place," Judith Gardener, the school's principal told THE STAR.

When THE STAR visited the location, the break-in was obvious as there was a big hole in the wall which marked the point of entry for the thieves.

A lock on a grill leading to an office where the school's appliances were kept was also twisted and prevented access to that room for the school's staff themselves.

" The lock, it cyahh open inno ... apparently they used a scissors and the scissors was broken in pieces," Gardener further explained.

However, for all their troubles, the thieves did not get much this time around but a few dollars.

"Some silver out of me draw and $200 ... some silver right here, normally I have some silver right here," the vice-principal pointed out to THE STAR as she examined the contents of her table drawer.

It was discovered that the school had been broken into by the vice-principal who arrived around 7 a.m. and noticed that a part of the wall leading to a classroom was destroyed.

Gardener told THE STAR that the school is vulnerable because they cannot afford a security guard to secure the premises. She also appealed to the public for assistance to purchase half acre of land which is nearby to the school's current location.

The land, she said, would be used to construct a new school as it currently is located on property owned by the community centre.

"We're just asking corporate Jamaica and whoever can assist to help us move out of this community centre because we have title and everything in hand," Gardener remarked.

The Portmore police confirmed that a report of the break- in was made.
