After deadly plunge over precipice ... 10 remain in hospital

Ten persons are still in the hospital suffering from serious injuries following the tragic Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) accident on Friday.

The JUTC bus
carrying a church group to a retreat had plunged into a precipice in Faith's Pen, St Ann. The accident left a 16-year-old Bridgeport High School student dead and 40 persons injured.

The unauthorised driver who fled the scene after the incident has since turned himself in to the Spanish Town police with a broken leg and has been charged with vehicular manslaughter.

When THE STAR spoke to Rev Dr W. A. Blair, pastor of Faith New Testament Church of God, in Bayside, Portmore, he said: "I do not like the conditions that I am seeing of the 10 persons that remain in hospital, most of them have head and chest bruises, head wounds and bruises all over their bodies."

He said of the 10 injured persons, six of them were in the St Ann's Bay Hospital while the other four were at the Spanish Town Hospital. "We are thankful to God that despite their injuries they are coming on. It's amazing and a blessing that they are doing so well," Blair said.

However, when THE STAR asked the pastor if they are looking into taking legal action against the bus company he said he was now focusing on the well-being of his members at this time, and would have to meet with the injured to really see what happened.

In the meantime, the Transport Minister, Mike Henry, has so far ordered a preliminary report of the accident "so that blame and responsibility in the wider sense can be squarely laid where appropriate, as the entire JUTC has come under intense negative focus possibly because of the folly of two grown men," the minister said.

When THE STAR asked the JUTC corporate communication manager, Reginald Allen, yesterday if the company is worried about any possible legal action from the church he reasoned: "At this time I cannot speak to that as we are focusing on the humanitarian aspect, since Friday, we have been focusing on their injuries and suffering and today senior management will be meeting to look into the implications and options going forward."
