Frustrating ... hoax caller has phoned thousands of times
A RAPPER with a Jamaican accent is being hunted by cops after making THOUSANDS of bizarre hoax 999 calls.
The man dials the emergency number, but when his call is answered he begins to RAP, SING, CHANT and PREACH to the operator.Audio clips of his calls were released by Greater Manchester Police today in the hope someone will recognise his voice.
The calls have been going on since January 2009, and in the last three months alone there have been 700.
Call handlers dealing with him are tied up for several minutes, stopping them from responding to genuine emergencies.
And it is costing the force up to £1,000 A MONTH just to answer his calls.
Officers have blocked more than 60 mobile phone SIM cards, but the man continues to make nuisance calls from unregistered phones.
Police have worked with mobile operators to establish that most of the calls are made from the Moss Side or Old Trafford areas of Manchester, which both have large Afro-Caribbean communities.
Superintendent Karan Lee, head of call handling, said: "I would hope he does not make these calls out of malice because he is putting lives at risk.
"At busy times, the line can be blocked by his calls which mean people with a genuine emergency cannot get through.
"We feel incredibly frustrated when this happens, because we are constantly striving to provide the best possible service.
"Nuisance calls are no laughing matter. I do not know what motivates this man, but it is not funny when we cannot respond to a real emergency."
