Former South African president Nelson Mandela was absent from the World Cup opening this morning because of the tragic death of his great-granddaughter.
Thirteen-year-old, Zenani Mandela died when the car taking her home from a pre-competition concert in Soweto overturned.
The driver of the car has been arrested and charged with drinking and driving.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation says the tragedy made it inappropriate for the former president, who is 91-years-old, to attend the World Cup opening ceremony in Johannesburg.
