'Walk for Peace' postponed ... due to fear of unrest

The 'Walk for Peace' which was being organised by members of the entertainment fraternity has been postponed.

Scheduled initially for May 23, starting from the Police Officers Club in New Kingston and ending at Heroes Circle in downtown Kingston, an organiser for the event confirmed yesterday that the march has been postponed. The organiser explained, "due to the unrest in the country we decided to just postpone it for a later date".

On Monday, Prime Minister Bruce Golding announced that he would be signing the extradition papers for Christopher 'Dudus' Coke. Rumours of the extradition document being signed started circulating on Monday after which a number of business places in downtown Kingston closed early, as persons fled the area with the expectations that violence would erupt upon the announcement.

According to the organiser, while the march has been postponed it will be held in the future as they said, "we are going to have the march without a doubt".

When THE STAR interviewed Shaggy, who is a spokesperson for the 'Walk for Peace', last Friday, he explained that they were still in the planning stages and permits from the police were being organised. In addition, the artistes who would be participating were also yet to be confirmed.

He had said: "Something has to be done and who better to do it than the artistes. Artistes are very influential people. If we can take a step towards peace then we can send a message to society."

For Shaggy, the idea to have a peace march had been in his mind for a while now. He said: "This violence ting been going on for a while now, but what really brought this about is what happened wid Oneil from Voicemail, and then the follow-up with Cobra. I remember coming to Jamaica one time and seeing the murder rate that was being published in The Gleaner, and just found it alarming. The number is in the 500s, and it's not even half of the year yet."

Oneil Edwards from the group Voicemail was shot on Monday as he entered his home in Duhaney Park, St Andrew. He was rushed to the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH), where he remains in critical but stable condition. Last Tuesday, deejay Cobra was shot in the shoulder in Portmore and was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital. He is now at home recovering.
