A man who tried to smuggle 15 pounds of ganja to The Bahamas inside 20 bammies was slapped with a nine-month prison sentence following a lengthy mitigation plea by his lawyer Friday.

Dwight Williams, a 23-year-old pan chicken vendor, was also fined $135,000, and will serve a further six months in prison if the fine is not paid.

Williams was sentenced by Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrates Court for sentencing, after he had previously pleaded guilty to charges of possession of, dealing in, and taking steps to export ganja.

He was held at the Norman Manley International Airport on April 19 after the drug was discovered in his luggage.
