Plans to repatriate Haitian migrants hit a snag

Plans by the government to repatriate a group of 31 Haitians who landed in the island recently have hit a snag following news that one of the group has given birth to a child. Information Minister Daryl Vaz told our news centre on Saturday afternoon that the authorities are trying to determine how best to treat with the situation, given the fact that plans to send the Haitians back were at an advanced stage.

He noted that the remainder of the group is due to depart for Haiti in a matter of days.

The female, who is the wife of the captain of the boat which landed in Holland Bay, St. Thomas last Saturday gave birth on Wednesday at the Port Antonio Hospital.

There were two pregnant women among the 31 Haitians.

The other woman is in the early stages of pregnancy.

They were transported to Portland where they were checked at the Port Antonio Health Centre then taken to the Port Antonio Seventh Day Adventist Church where they are being housed.

The authorities, who have stressed that the country lacks the resources to sustain the Haitians for any extended period, repatriated sixty two Haitians last month.
