Fun performances and an abundance of paint provided immense entertainment at Bacchanal J'Ouvert at Mas Camp, New Kingston, last Friday night.
At 4 a.m. when the selector announced that it was time to step outside, the paint-covered bodies did not hesitate. But waiting outside were people wanting to join in on the revelry or those just wishing to see the march. As people followed behind the four trucks, they danced and some continued to throw paint on others. Some sprayed ice-cold water on others.
There was even an old man walking around with a cold bag of water whispering to random people, "Say hello to my little friend." This was not welcomed by two cameramen sitting on the road, as they simultaneously shouted 'Nooooo'.
Cars along the route were also painted and people who got caught driving in the march were stopped.
'wicked wine'.
There was even an instance where two women held on to the front of a taxi just wining and refusing to move, despite the fact that the car was stuck in the middle of the road. Then, there was a man driving a convertible jeep that was not spared. Random people jumped onto the vehicle and began gyrating. Then, one woman jumped onto the lap of the Caucasian man who was driving, giving what could be described as a 'wicked wine'. Eventually, his now painted vehicle was freed but with oncoming traffic, he still couldn't move.
Before marching on the road, the patrons were fully entertained with the performances. As Shurwayne Winchester's name was announced, people started moving closer to the stage. He had them jumping as he entered the stage singing LookThe Band Coming, before moving swiftly into Come Beta. While doing Don't Stop, he seemed very versed on hip-hop moves. Little by little, he removed pieces of his outfit until he was shirtless. By now the crowd was getting wilder, as they threw water, ice and other kinds of liquids in the air.
The vibe from Imij & Co was felt from the mere beating of the drums before the singers took the stage doing It's Carnival. They too sang Palance, which the patrons did not mind hearing another time and many other times throughout the event. Afterwards, they did songs like Thiefing A Little Tonight and Push Bumpa, which the patrons enjoyed.
