Entertainer Garfield 'Zebra' Vassell is still in custody without legal representation several months after he was held by the Bog Walk police for allegedly committing acts of sexual impropriety.
The artiste, who is responsible for songs such as, Rupert and Redder Than Red has been in custody since September.
He is currently before the Linstead Resident Magistrate's Court in St Catherine, facing a charge of carnal abuse. The offence was allegedly committed against a relative of Zebra's female friend. When the deejay reappeared in court recently, he was still without the services of a lawyer. He was remanded and is scheduled to appear again on May 12.
strange manner
Allegations are that a report was made to the St Catherine North police after the child was allegedly observed behaving in a strange manner with the entertainer. Investigations were conducted and it was revealed that the child was sexually molested.
The police sought the deejay in connection the allegations but could not get to him. The search for the once popular entertainer continued for approximately four months. He was eventually held on the western side of the island.
Along with Vassell, the mother of the child has been charged with negligence.
Vassell was released from prison in July 2008 after completing a 10-year sentence for rape.
