A VIA bus driver throws a punch at a passenger and is allowed to keep his job.

VIA says thats because the passenger, Lonnie Torrance, provoked the fight.

The two men exchanged words off and on for several minutes while the bus was parked at the Las Palmas Mall.

The passenger then threw what police say was a paper bag with a bottle in it at the bus driver.

According to police records, the driver, Johnny White, admitted he punched Torrance.

White was not criminally charged but was suspended for two days for violating VIA's policy about leaving the bus.

Torrance was arrested for public intoxication.

You never hit anyone for any reason, said Torrance. Sure I was crazy. I don't know what that was that I threw at him. I don't know if that was real or what I remember is real. I was out of it. It's really, really strange."

VIA is currently working on a passenger code of conduct policy that it plans to post in all buses come this summer.
