Inside The Music Biz - 'Awards', adding value to the artiste.

The following is the fifth episode of a talk show programme titled 'INSIDE THE MUSIC BIZ' co-hosted by Thaddeus "Teddy" Laidley every Wednesday at 3:30 to 4:00pm. The programme is aired on HOT 102 FM during "THE HOT MIX", with Richie B 2:00 to 5:00 PM. 'INSIDE THE MUSIC BIZ' is aimed at offering insights into the music business for aspiring artistes and industry personnel.

The phrase, "and the award goes to" has began to trill our minds, and so I presume, adrenalines are now in overdrive as we approach the award season in the music industry; Artistes, Industry players and fans are at their P's and Q's as they anticipate the name's behind the phrase.

There are a number of award shows surrounding the music industry both locally and internationally, however, there are four main ones;The Grammy Awards, The American Music Awards, The Billboard Music Awards and our locally established yet renowned, Excellence in Music and Entertainment Awards, the EME's. These award ceremonies are held to celebrate the achievements and contributions of persons within the entertainment industry.

One may consider the process of selecting the nominees to be awarded, bias or unfair as such process is influenced by favoritism. In effort to change such mindset we must take in consideration how these awards are categorized and what method of selection is been undertaken. The 2008 Excellence in Music and Entertainment (EMEs) will recognize the achievements of the top performers from within the recording industry between October 01, 2006 and September 30, 2007. Nominees for the EMEawards are determined based on their performance on The Weekly Jamaica Music Countdown which is presented on Hot 102 FM every Friday afternoon during the Hot Mix hosted by Richie B.

This countdown is compiled from the contribution of sound system selectors, Night Clubs, record shops island wide and other radio DJs. Thirty percent of the nominees selected are so done through internet voting. This year's awards will also be extra special, as there will be for the first time, several 'honour' awards presented to some stalwarts and stand-outs who have made a great contribution to the growth and development of the Jamaican music industry. While the Grammys are awarded based on votes by members of the Academy, American Music Awards (AMA's) are determined by a poll of music buyers. The Billboard awards are based on popularity in this case, based on Billboard's year-end music charts, which are based on Nielsen data for sales, downloads and airplay.

It is believed that awards add value to an artiste; I must admit such taught may be subjected to questioning but its practical. An award enhances the artiste image and adds value to him/her as a product; in such that when an artiste receives an award he/ she becomes recognizable and gains popularity from the public. At this stage the artiste is expected to continue on the path of his/her achievement. Another aspect of award adding value is through the marketability and pricing of the artiste. The artiste product is now in high demands, and so when there is a demand for the product, there may be an increase in the booking fee for the particular artiste. I have once encountered a situation of such nature; I was a part of a production team that was in negotiation for booking an international Hip Hop artiste whom was nominated for a Grammy award, to complement some of our local artiste on a show. However upon receiving the award we were notified by the booking agent that there was an increase in the price of booking the artiste, also the artiste was not available for the suggested date and would be commencing tour shortly.

Our Jamaican artiste have been a part of the Grammy awards for the past 20 years, with the likes of The Black Uhuru, Shabba, The Marley's, Shaggy, Sean Paul, Bennie Man just to name a few. Persons that have been nominated from our music industry for the Grammy awards this year are as follows:

Such nominations have and continue to keep us visible on the international scene, and so we benefits immensely through continuous publicity and booking.

However artistes are advised to engage in product development, not only for the purposes of being nominated for an award but, for the success of his/her career.
