GUNMEN late yesterday ambushed a taxi on Tavern Drive in Papine, St Andrew, killing its driver and a male passenger.
Police identified the dead taxi operator as Dwayne Douglas, but said they had still not ascertained the identity of the other man, who they believe was armed.
The incident, which occurred about 6:00 pm, sent shock waves throughout the community.
"We cannot say what exactly happened but based on how everything look, it appears they came for the passenger," a policeman from the Major Investigation Taskforce speculated.
"There were about eight or nine spent shells outside the car and a similar number inside. This suggests that someone inside the vehicle was firing at the persons outside as well," added the cop who noted, however, that no weapon was taken from the scene.
The policeman said it appeared that no other passenger was in the vehicle at the time of the incident.
Yesterday, even as nightfall drew closer, dozens of puzzled residents waited near the crime scene to get word from the police as to what had occurred.
