A savvy Florida sheriff's deputy used Google Earth to track down and arrest a man on charges of illegally dumping a boat near the man's home. After finding an 18-foot boat dumped in an undeveloped subdivision about 15 miles north of Pensacola, according to the Pensacola News Journal, Deputy Gregory Barnes consulted satellite images provided by the virtual globe.
Google Earth shows archived satellite and aerial images of communities across the world. In this case, it showed the previous location of the boat.
Barnes used Google Earth to look at the surrounding area and allegedly saw a fuzzy image of the vessel at Dwight Foster's home.
Police say Foster, 57, admitted dumping the boat, according to the paper. Officials say it cost just $18 to properly dispose of the boat at a landfill.
Foster now faces a $5,000 fine and up to five years in prison.
