THE SAS has honoured two of its hero hounds with a moving memorial.

German Shepherds Thor and Scotty lost their lives on secret operations in Iraq.

They are remembered with a simple stone monument in a garden at the elite regiment's HQ Stirling Lines, near Hereford.

An accompanying plaque bears their names and Latin words saying: "Always vigilant, strong, prepared and faithful".

Both dogs died in 2008, during the Special Air Service's titanic struggle to destroy an al-Qaeda bombing network. They were sent into suspect buildings to subdue fleeing insurgents.

Brave Thor refused to let go of an insurgent's leg despite being shot three times and hacked at with a machete. He had to be put down due to his injuries.

Six months earlier, Scotty was shot dead on a night-time raid.

An SAS source said: "Thor and Scotty were with us through thick and thin in Iraq and never let us down. They won't be forgotten."
