US cancels visa of senior cop

THE Police Officers' Association (POA) yesterday sought answers from the police high command regarding the cancellation of the United States non-immigrant visa of a superintendent who is allegedly under investigation for corruption.

The POA said it was subsequently informed that the police high command would be investigating the source of the information to the US Embassy in Kingston, which led to the cancellation of the visa.

However, Acting Commissioner of Police Owen Ellington yesterday afternoon shot down suggestions by the POA that a probe would be conducted to determine the source of the information to the United States Government.

"I'm not aware of it... It wouldn't be something that interests me anyway. Nobody spoke to me, I can assure you," Ellington told the Observer.

The superintendent, who has more that 25 years service with the constabulary, was recently notified by the US Embassy in Kingston that his visa had been cancelled.

Yesterday, POA chairman, Superintendent Michael James told the Observer that the officer had informed the association that a letter was sent by high-ranking members of the JCF to the embassy, informing them that he was being investigated for corruption, and asked that his visa be cancelled.

Superintendent James said the association then contacted Ellington, who said he was not aware that a letter was sent to the US Embassy.

Said James: "The commissioner indicated that he would cause the necessary queries to be done to find out where [the letter] originated and to put some protocol in place. I think he would want to have a say in those issues... Having brought it to the commissioner's attention I expect him to treat with it and advise us."

James said he wanted the commissioner to indicate to the association if the JCF would now be requesting the cancellation of the visas of members who were being investigated.

Last night, James appeared dumfounded when informed about Ellington's response.

"He said he was not aware of it. We'll have to take him at his word and leave the rest to the judge. We are going to formally request of the chief (commissioner) to put some protocol in place," James said.
