Life in the coming months may become a lot more crazier for a Corporate Area 'madman' after the police constable he reportedly attacked and beat with an iron pipe earlier this month, died at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) last Friday.
Information reaching THE STAR is that the special constable, Norman Nunes, 29, who was attached to Protective Services, succumbed to his injuries at 7:30 p.m. His attacker, however, whose identity is yet to be released, remains in hospital under police guard.
Reports on the tragic incident are that sometime after 2 p.m., Nunes was in his motor vehicle in traffic along Maxfield Avenue, close to the Half-Way Tree Police Station when his attacker, a man said to be of unsound mind, came up and hit his car.
The constable reportedly got out of the vehicle to accost the man who pulled an iron pipe from behind his back and attacked the policeman. Nunes was hit repeatedly in the head, causing grave injuries.
gave chase
Information continued that the attacker fled the scene, making his way on to the nearby Cargill Avenue, while police officers in the area who had witnessed the incident gave chase before later shooting and injuring the man.
Both the injured policeman and the attacker were rushed to the KPH.
Speaking with THE STAR yesterday, newly appointed Head of the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) Inspector Steve Brown revealed that it was 'more than likely' that the 'insane attacker' would face a murder charge for his fatal attack on the constable.
Brown said that the psychological assessment of the attacker would also be the first step of the way going forward and officially ascertaining the true state of the man's headspace. After this is done, then definitive actions will be decided on.
Nunes was the second lawman in a matter of months to have faced a gruesome attack. Last December, a policeman had to be rushed to hospital after his throat was slashed with a knife while he was on duty at Jamaica House.
Reports said the alleged attacker Andre Pratt, went to the main gate and tried to enter, requesting to speak with Prime Minister Bruce Golding. After being barred, a knife was used to cut the lawman's throat.
The injured policeman was rushed to the Andrews Memorial Hospital for treatment while his colleagues accosted the attacker. The policeman survived his injury. Pratt, 23, was subsequently charged with wounding with intent.
